ABOUT MECHANICAL ACTIVATION
Mechanical activation with high-energy is used to modify materials beyond particle size eduction. Depending on the mineral system, activation can introduce structural defects, increase surface activity, and alter particle morphology. These effects are assessed individually for each material, as activation response and performance gain differ significantly between material types.
The objective is controlled activation, aligned with downstream processing and application requirements.
Upgrading Recycled and Secondary Materials
Recycled and secondary raw materials often exhibit variability in particle size, morphology, and surface condition. Mechanical activation enables functional upgrading by:
• breaking down agglomerates and exposing fresh reactive surfaces,
• reducing the impact of feedstock variability,
• restoring or improving performance-critical properties.
• improve interfacial interaction with binders and matrices,
• enhance sintering behavior and phase reactivity – lowering sintering temperatures
• support improved dispersion and homogeneity
This approach allows recycled materials to be used in technically demanding refractory and industrial applications, rather than being limited to downcycling.
Application-Oriented Evaluation
Activation parameters are defined based on material-specific response and application-relevant performance targets. Evaluation includes:
• selection of activation intensity and residence time,
• assessment of energy input versus functional benefit,
• alignment with customer qualification and testing requirements.
Mechanical activation is thus applied as a precise material engineering tool, not as a generic processing step.
